Sutton Bridge Tidal Sluice,
Gate Refurbishment
The Sutton Bridge Tidal Sluice protects the South Holland Main Drain from the tidal reaches of the River Nene.
The twin steel lift gates allow fluvial discharge during low tides, but close to protect over 20,000 hectares of the District during high tides. Constructed in 1938, the sluice still provides an integral part of the tidal defences to over 8,000 properties.
The 8m wide doors were last refurbished 25 years ago and much of the trussed steelwork and rivets are suffering from severe corrosion in the wetted zone. A contract was let to remove each gate and undertake repairs and paint treatment in a controlled site environment.
Project economics were appraised by Hannah Reed in accordance with DEFRA/EA guidelines to identify the optimal management approach for protection over the next 30 years.
