Great Barford Flood Mitigation Reservoirs
The village of Great Barford, approximately five miles to the east of Bedford, has been susceptible to flooding and traffic congestion for many years. The construction of the Great Barford bypass presented an opportunity to mitigate the social, economic and environmental impact that these factors are having on the community.
Collaborative thinking, and DEFRA grant aid funding, has helped deliver a flood relief scheme that will mitigate the risk of flooding in the village.
Two dams, up to 4m in height, have been constructed within the natural valleys upstream of the village to impound flows in the local watercourses, and restrict discharge into the constrained urbanised channels downstream.
Woven between sensitive archaeology and ecology, the earth embankments now integrate with the agricultural landscape. With the potential to impound 130,000 m3 of flood storage, the raised resrvoirs have been design, constructed and monitored in accordance with the Reservoirs Act.
