Dukes Wharf Development, Norwich
Dukes Wharf is a proposed vibrant new quarter for the city centre, featuring commercial, residential and arts and leisure facilities.
Taking advantage of the riverside frontage, the historic location has seen the Duke of Norfolk's Palace, an Iron Works and a Brewery.
The design philosophy encompasses a contemporary and exciting architectural solution that makes strong reference to this history and the rich tapestry of colour, texture and delight of Norwich
However, the riverside location presented design challanges associated with flood risk and the future maintenance of the town's flood defences. With areas of the site prone to extreme event flooding an innovative solution to flood mitigation was required.
Flood storage compenstation is therefore being provided within the river corridor by setting back the line of the secondary river defences at basement level. Pedestrians are encouraged into the river corridor by an open walkway and external dining area with the building descretely cantilevered above. The walkway will be demountable to allow future maintenance to the primary river defences at the river's edge.
