Halvergate Marshes Water Level Management Scheme
Norfolk Broads |
| In recognition of its environmental importance, the Halvergate Marshes Scheme is the first of its kind to receive 100% DEFRA grant aid. The site is a nationally (SSSI) and internationally (Ramsar) important wildlife site and the largest expanse of traditionally managed grazing marshland in the Broads. |
| Hannah-Reed identified solutions and developed a strategy for the controlled supply of
water to the scheme, taking account of water balance models in the hydrological regime. |
|
| These include an automated freshwater sluice gate controlled by water demand sensors within the marshes
and the salinity sensors within the River Bure. When conditions prevail, the inlet will let water into a 7.5km network of high level
carriers; existing land drainage channels which have been raised and widened through extensive earthworks to provide storage during prolonged dry weather. |
| A series of structures were designed to control water levels and supply adjacent ESA subscribed land.
The linear reservoir then discharges to the fresher waters of the Fleet before controlled spillage into the sensitive marshes downstream. |
