Killingholme Marshes
Drainage Improvements
Humberside
The South Humber Bank near Immingham is synonymous with heavy industry and broken skylines. It is perhaps therefore surprising that amongst Killingholme’s container ports,
storage facilities and oil refineries lies a small ecological ‘oasis’ of international importance.
Recognising the importance of the ecology in the area, and the drive for development and economic growth, Hannah-Reed have developed a strategic drainage and flood mitigation solution.
Working with the potential developers in the area, the solution both mitigates pollution and flood risk and the potential impact on the local ecology.
Scheme objectives:
assess the fluvial flood risk with
   hydraulic modelling;
identify a sustainable strategic
   approach to flood management to
   avoid piecemeal solutions;

increase the standard of flood
   protection commensurate with
   the changing land use;

mitigate the impact of predicted
   climatic change

mitigate the pollution impacts

protect the sensitive saline habitat
   of the RAMSAR pits.
Implementation of the channel infrastructure has already commenced and the construction of a 9 cumec land drainage pumping facility is programmed for 2010. The scheme is being assessed against the the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Awards Scheme.
